명시감상, 맥아더장군 詩
아버지의 기도 / D. 맥아더
하나님! 제 자식이 이런 사람으로 성장케 해주소서
자신의 약한 부분 알아 차릴 수 있게 강해지고
두려울 때 자신의 두려움에 맞설 만큼 용감하며
정직한 패배에 부끄러워하지 않으며 꿋꿋해지고
승리했을 때 겸손하고 온화한 사람 되게 하소서.
Build me a son, O Lord,
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid,
one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
and humble and gentle in victory.
소망만으론 실천함을 대신할 수 없으며
신을 알고 자신을 아는 것이
지식의 초석이 됨을 아는 자식 되게 하소서.
Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of
deeds,
A son who will know Thee,
And that to know himself is the foundation stone of
knowledge.
바라오니, 쉽고 편안한 길로 인도하지 마시고
고난과 도전 요구되는 시련과 자극 받게 하소서
그리하여 폭풍우 속에서도 두려움 없이 맞서며
실패하는 이들에게 동정심 갖는 방법 배우게 하소서.
Lead him, I pray, not in the pace of ease and comfort,
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
Here let him learn to stand up in the storm,
here let him learn compassion for those who fail.
마음이 깨끗하고 목표를 높이 세우게 하며
남을 다스리려고 하기 전에
먼저 자신을 다스리는 사람이 되게 하소서
또한 웃는 방법을 배우되 우는 법을 잊지 말게 하소서
미래를 향해 나아가되 과거를 잊지 말게 하소서.
Build me a son whose heart will be dean, whose goal ill be
high,
A son who will master himself
before he seeks to master other men,
one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep,
one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the
past.
그리고 바라오니
이 모든 것을 다 갖추게 하신 다음에는
넉넉한 유머 감각을 더해 주소서
그리하여 늘 진지함을 잃지 아니하면서도
지나치게 소심한 사람이 되지 않게 하소서.
And after all these things are his,
add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,
so that he may always be serious,
yet never take himself too seriously.
그에게 겸손함을 주시어
참된 위대성은 소박함에 있고
참된 지혜는 열린 마음에 있으며
참된 힘은 온유함에 있음을 늘 기억하게 하소서.
Give him humility,
So that he may always remember the simplicity of
greatness,
The open! mind of true wisdom,
and the meekness of true strength.
그리하면 아버지 저 스스로에게
‘내가 헛되이 살진 않았구나!’ 라고
스스로 말할 수 있도록 보살펴 주소서.
Then I, his father,
Will dare to whisper,
I have not lived in vain.
